GIVE THE GIFT OF CONNECTION: NATURE THROUGH NATURE

As our Elevate Youth team starts to reflect during quieter evenings, we are feeling full and grateful for all the moments of awe, comfort and support we are able to create with young people while exploring tide pools, pushing through perceived limits while surfing, or learning to control our speed while hitting the slopes together.

Despite a year that has felt heavy for many across our city, our youth keep showing us what optimism and courage really look like. They remind us that even in uncertain times, there are bright openings for growth.

In Boston, more than one in three children lives in a household that struggles to meet basic needs, and they often shoulder adult responsibilities, which makes consistent support and space to create rejuvenating, core memories even more important.

This spring, after a girls’ camping trip where the group found more than 50 newts and bravely ventured out on a nighttime owl prowl, Allison told us that she “learned not to be scared when [she] is far away from home.”

Whenever the world feels overwhelming, I breathe deeply and hear her words. Even one simple, nearby adventure can reset us. For me, it was a kayak-camping trip over Labor Day that grounded me, opened up space for creative thinking, and reminded me why we keep showing up for our youth.

They deserve the same access as their peers to paddling, backpacking, proper gear, and the resources that make meaningful outdoor experiences possible, whether close to home or miles away

We are more than a ‘one and done’ excursion. We offer mentoring, safe spaces, multiyear pathways, and connections that can expand all of our horizons for a lifetime.

In 2026, it is more important than ever to make awe-filled opportunities available to youth and families from our most vulnerable communities. Even just twenty minutes outside helps us connect with what fills us up, connect compassionately with each other, and connect to the gift of nature, inspiring youth to care for our green spaces for generations to come.

We’ll continue to nurture our most precious gifts, our young people, and prepare for the opportunities ahead.

As one of our climbers named Aidan advised,“Keep trying, and kind of listen to your friends and take your time, and you’ll make it to the top. Just push through the hard stuff.“

Thank you for your gift and encouragement as we join Aidan, and all of the kind and innovative supporters in the Elevate Youth community to share life lessons and connections through time well spent in nature.

With gratitude,

Chaya Harris

Executive Director
